Position Summary
DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) is seeking a part-time Alarm Board Operator. DU-COMM is a large consolidated public safety 9-1-1 communications center in Illinois and currently serves forty-four (44) member agencies and over 850,000 residents in DuPage and neighboring counties. DU-COMM receives requests for Police, Fire, and EMS via 9-1-1 and non-emergency lines. DU-COMM has a staff of 120 and employs 87 full-time 9-1-1 Telecommunicators. The FYE2023 budget is $18.4 million.
The Alarm Board Operator works under the direction of the on-duty Supervisor in the Operations Center, providing support to the Operations department.
Essential Job Functions
An Alarm Operator is responsible for monitoring and processing incoming burglar and fire alarms, handling phone calls from business owners, alarm companies, member agencies, and citizens, and completing clerical work related to the alarm system.
Employees in this position need to be available to work from 6 am to 6 pm in 4 to 8 hour increments, Monday through Friday. Hours will average around 20 hours per week.
This is a part-time non-union position. Employees will start earning paid time off at an accrual rate of .1 hours times the number of hours worked bi-weekly, after they successfully pass training. There are no health benefits, but an additional extended sick leave allowance is earned per hours worked.
Alarm Operator job duties include monitoring police/fire alarms, accurately entering alarm data into the Computer-Aided Dispatch terminal (CAD), taking alarms in and out of service, and completing clerical work.
Provides various notifications to citizens or businesses for alarm activations.
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Requirements:
o Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
o Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent
o Applicants must be able to accurately type at least 35 wpm
o Applicants must be able to pass the applicant testing, full police background investigation, polygraph test, psychological exam. physical exam, and drug/medical screenings
o Schedule flexibility and multi-tasking are fundamental
Education/Experience Required
Preferred Qualifications:
o Previous experience in a public safety environment (Police, Fire, EMS, or alarm monitoring)
o Experience with multi-line telephone equipment
o Bi-Lingual - Spanish or other desired languages
o Computer/data entry experience
o Customer service experience
Physical Requirements
The employee regularly works in an indoor or office environment and while performing the duties of this job is regularly required to sit and use repetitive hand motion as well as frequently required to talk, hear, stand and walk.
Must maintain vision to 20/20 corrected vision; must hear speech out of both ears in the normal range of 30 DB at 500 to 2000 Hz range. Must be able to speak and communicate clearly over telephones and radio. Must be capable of sitting for up to 8-12 hours per day. Must be able to wear a headset. Must be capable of activating radio and phone systems utilizing buttons and switches. Must be able to input data via a keyboard.
